As you may have noticed, there is an (almost) real-time picture of my backyard on my homepage and my
weather page
. There is a little bit of magic behind this but not too much.
I have a
TrendNet TV-IP400
camera in the hot tub room and it points out the back window:
This unit does a few things. First, it can be fully controlled by opening it up in the browser. Check it out
here
. Second, it has an ftp function that will both create a picture file and then drop it on my server on whatever schedule I set. In my case, it is 30 seconds. My ftp server catches the file and then drops it into my html directory. At that point I can reference it anywhere on my site (it is always the same filename).
The last part of this is allowing users to get to my camera using their browser. I use a service called
No IP
for my domain registration. This company does a few things. First, since the evil cable company can change my IP address at any time, this company will change the dns to the new IP within a second or two. Second, this service will create a redirect that will allow me to push web cam traffic through port 82. I merely have to point all traffic on this port to the web cam and set an administrator password. At some point I may set a password for general traffic but not too many people know of this site as of this writing :-).
