    The Mystical Side of Conception

    As you probably know, my wife and I brought our first child into the world two weeks ago. We had quite a bit of trouble conceiving a child - if you need to laugh a little bit you can read about my trips to the clinic here.

    What amazed me about this whole process was the reaction of several religious friends and family members along the way:

    - Several family members said that a recently-deceased relative would surely be pushing God to allow us to be pregnant. Isn't it bad enough that this (supposedly) monotheistic religion now lets anyone have supernatural powers, we are now expected to cheapen the memory of deceased loved ones by pretending that they are pulling strings in the sky. By that logic should I have blamed her if we weren't able to have a child?

    - One friend's wife advised us that we were going against Jesus' wishes by seeking medical counsel. I guess I have to give her credit - the following year she gave birth to a child that had severe medical problems and she blamed herself for being a bad Christian. Yikes.

    - The fact that we were able to get pregnant and have a child after two years of trying was in fact a gift from above.

    I don't know how these doctors, nurses and scientists do it. After dedicating much their lives to either researching new techniques or actually helping people deliver a child, I would go absolutely bananas the first time that I heard someone thank God for the "gift". I've been bottling this up for quite a while but it is time to say how I feel. It is in fact a gift - a gift from modern science only made possible by the fact that we could spend thousands (and I mean thousands) of dollars to make it happen.

    Once again, this is the same kind of thinking that is normal among the faithful. They can cherry-pick through any bit of carnage to find even the slightest ray of sunshine so that they can say "aha! More proof of His goodness". And as usual the rest of us will point out that if he was really interested in our happiness that he would have simply allowed us to have a child normally rather than forcing us through two years of pain. But hey, lets leave logic out of this - right? I'm sure that he has a divine plan for me and that our pain will be rewarded in the afterlife....

    Anyway....

    I'd like to say "thank you" to all of the men and women that are the real heroes in this story. I'm proud to say that my wife and I will be donating all leftover "resources" to charity when we are finished so that poor people that were seemingly left out in the cold by the big kahuna can have a chance at the same kind of happiness that we have experienced. The sad thing is that there will be someone that will read this blog and think that the sky father put me in the position to help someone else. Now that is insulting. The old saying is true - a single pair of hands working together is always more useful than a thousand pairs clasped in prayer.

    One last thing.....

    On the day that I was taking wife and baby home I had to run out to the car to get the car seat. As I entered the elevator a middle-aged woman noticed the car seat and put two and two together. "Taking home your child today?". "Yes", I replied. "May God always provide for you" the woman said with a smile. Yes, if only that were the case.
