I'll never forget my 2004 trip to Lotusphere. Lotusphere is an IBM conference that is hosted at Disney World every January. On top of being a great learning experience, it is also a great opportunity to let your hair down when the learning is done. The topper is the "Wednesday Night Party" - IBM rents out one of the local theme parks for conference attendees only and buses everyone there. Once there, everything is free - rides, beer, food, beer, etc. The Wednesday night party that year as at Universal Studios and I'll never forget it. There were four of us there and I will always have tremendous memories of us yelling our heads off and just being kids again (the 15 Heinekens that I had probably didn't hurt either).

This past Thursday my softball team won the championship in our softball league. I know, I know... it is just the Grand Island Men's Thursday Nigh B league, but that isn't why I am writing. It had been several years since I had played on a winning team. I play with a tremendous bunch of guys - there is never a minute of animosity towards anyone in the group.

There are a few things that made the whole thing extra special. First, we were underdogs throughout the playoffs. Second, none of us are quite what we used to be in terms of physical ability (although maybe there is something to be said for experience as I remember losing to older teams when I was a younger man). Third, the fact that we enjoy each other so much really made it that much more special when we could enjoy ourselves after the game with big smiles on our faces, just like we did when we were kids.
