Meteor Showers and Near-Death Interviews

Created on Monday, August 16, 2010        Bookmark and Share

We had a rather fantastic friday evening. Besides our trip to see Tears for Fears (see review with NEW live video here), Tony's chick was kind enough to remind us that there was a meteor shower happening that night. Truth be told, I had forgotten about it because our conversation quickly changed to the concert.

Rebecca was exhausted by the time we got home and she went straight to bed. Being the night owl that I am, I began my usual routine of puttering. As luck would have it, the Yankees game was in a looooong rain delay so I was able to catch the end of their game at about 2 a.m. I was about to head off to bed when I remembered that the meteor shower was supposed to happen that night. I wandered out onto the back deck and pulled over a big patio chair. I sat there for about five minutes looking up at the sky for a sign (insert snickering here). I was just about to head in when I saw it - a streak of light across the sky. I have seen a meteor once or twice before out of the corner of my eye but never when I was actually looking for one. It really was amazing - it crossed half the sky in a half second and then was gone.

At that time I took my life into my own hands and woke up Rebecca. I wouldn't have blamed her if she didn't want to get up - it was a long day for a woman that is more than 8 months pregnant. Never wanting to be left out of anything, bestest gal hopped out of bed and put on a sweatshirt. Ten minutes later (and one broken folding chair - that wasn't my best moment) we were laying down in the middle of the driveway looking up at the sky. She tried to put the moves on me but I was having none of it.

We were fortunate enough to see 6 or 7 shooting stars. The really cool ones were the one that happened near the horizon. They almost looked like super-fast missiles that were raining down on the earth. It really was quite an experience.

And then something less spectacular. The first post-cancer video of my man Hitchens was released over the weekend and it isn't good. The interview really is fascinating as Hitchens is a proud man that hasn't lost his sense of humor or his grace. More importantly, he hasn't lost his sensibilities or his rationale mind.

There has been some really interesting conversation about Hitchens' illness. First, there is a debate amongst Christians as to whether they should pray for him or not. Hitchens is touched by this and addresses this in the video. There is also the school of thought that thinks that Hitchens might "see the light" on his deathbed. One person even implored to give it a chance "just in case". Of course, it is Pascal's Wager states that you should believe in the afterlife just to cover your bases. Hitchens made it quite clear that he wasn't into wish-thinking before and he isn't about to start it now.

From the interview:

Goldberg: So how are you doing?

Hitchens. I'm dying.

Ugh... is there a worse sentence than that?

I had more to say but I just don't have the stomach for it right now. A good friend just told me that his father is dying from the same. Tomorrow marks the five year anniversary of the passing of one of my best friends. I'm just bummed.
