Thoughts collected while wondering if everyone else also thinks that the new Sacha Baron Cohen looks unbelievably horrible.
As som you know, I am the pitching coach for my Godson's little league team. The league is filled with good people and good kids and the whole experience is a lot of fun (even thought you want to strangle the kids at times, but I'm sure my coaches thought the same about me).
There is one exception in the league. One kid is a complete arse. He mouths off at other players and other coaches (he mouthed off at me once) all the time. The worst part about it is that he is also the best player in the league, by a mile. He has hit one over the fence in every game we've played him (twice in one game), he probably has a fastball that tops 60 mph (which is a lot for a 12-and-under-league), not to mention a curve that actually cuves (the other kids love to think that they throw curveballs but they really don't).
As I mentioned a minute ago, this kid has mouthed off to me and another coach on the team already this year (both times completely unprovoked). In our last game with him he hit a home run and then stood there for several seconds and before walking down to first base. Needless to say, this is a huge no-no in the baseball world as you are showing up the other team. If you do this as an adult you get a baseball stuck between your ears the next time you get to the plate. Apparently this kid and his father (the coach of that team) have a reputation for both being arsehats and I've heard that teams shy away from having either one of them participate in travel leagues.
So we're playing this punk's team last night and we're absolutely murdering the other team. Better yet, the punk has booted several balls and was doubled up at second base on a fly ball that was caught. So we're up by something like 12 runs in the last inning and we run out a kid that hasn't pitched for us all year. As luck would have it, the kid walks a couple of people and the punk comes up. And he hits one out. And he stands there watching it go.
I start yelling at the kid to run and he turns around and smiles at our bench. He starts to walk down the first base line and then stops to shake the first base coach's hand. And that is when the controversy happened.
In the midst of his showboating he tripped over first base and fell flat on his face.
Our anger quickly subsided and all of the coaches on our bench burst out laughing. Hard. The kid got up and scowled and then started his saunter around the bases (again). The first base coach came over and he wasn't too happy. I felt bad for him - it wasn't his kid and it wasn't his team and he didn't like his behavior either. The coach (who is a very nice guy) said that while the kid was wrong it was wrong for the coaches to laugh at a 12 year old. I did apologize for my part in it.
After the game this kid's father refused to shake hands with us.
After the game I went back and forth about feeling for laughing. The kid is an absolute prick and deserved to be put in his place. Still, he is only 12 (or 13, I can't remember). I think at this point I feel 25% bad for laughing - after all, the kid wasn't phased in the least (he actually became more of a prick afterward). I'd appreciate your thoughts on the matter.

All good points, for sure. [
] I must say that I've never seen anything like this kid in my 20+ years of playing and coaching. You're always going to have a few good ones and a few bad ones but this kid is unbelievable. Bubba, it is funny that you mention him being plunked because one of the other coaches did suggest that. He'll get his one day, but not as a 12 year old. I remember being 12 and a travel coach told me to hit someone on purpose. I was mortified.

Yo Bubba, It is totally the kids father's fault that he acts the way he does. Unfortunately, you gotta "hate" the kid for acting the way he does. I coached Soccer, and basketball for 12 years, travel teams too (and even a little baseball) and there is a kid like that in every town. While I do not think you should be laughing at 12 year olds, it was a spontaneous act and I wouldn't worry too much about it. Next time have your pitcher drill him in the ass!

By age 12, the kid is MORE than old enough to know how he should behave. Of course, his father has probably taught him how to be the way he is from day one. Don't you dare apologize to anyone for laughing at an arrogant little git who has karma catch up with him. If anything, you should tell his dad that he did a shitty job raising the kid.
