A Night With the Cute Couple

Last night Rebecca and I were invited to dinner with one of the cuter couples that we've seen in a long time.

The couple consisted of my grandmother and her 92-year-old boyfriend.

I was really looking forward to our dinner together. Besides the fact that I love to see my grandmother, I am always fascinated by people that lived in an era from long ago. I have a lot of topics that I love to hear about - the great war, the early days of radio, etc. Our hosts spent several hours telling us about their childhood and coming to America (Bob moved here from Scotland when he was 10).

There were a few things that really stuck out about the evening. I'd say the first is that previous generations really looked at dating differently than we do. My grandmother is divorced and she really admired that Bob could overlook this fact (even though it was 40 or 50 years ago). I did not realize that people of her generation really looked at it like like that - she talked as if she had a scarlett letter on her forehead. Also, both on the phone and in person she tried to emphasize how innocent the relationship was. I'm not sure that it entered my head that it would be anything other than that (shivering) but it seemed important to both of them that we knew that it was on that level.

But more than anything it was great to see people really enjoying each other. It was pretty clear from their story that they are both novices when it comes to dating and that it was rather scary for each of them. But they both seemed to thoroughly enjoy each other - there was just a level of comfort and enjoyment that they share. They took turns telling the story of how they met and how they first agreed to go out with each other. It was very, very touching.

I know I'm not breaking new ground here but it is amazing how cyclical life is. I remember my early dating life (note to Rebecca: no, I don't) and it felt just as they described their courtship. It is a shame that we lose that level of innocence and simplicity.
