As you may know, our government has decided to made it more difficult to get into our country from Canada. To get back into this country you either need a passport or an "enhanced" driver's license. Since I live in a home that is less than a mile from the Canadian border it is pretty much mandatory that I get one.
To get this driver's license you need only to bring proof of residence and a social security card. Huh? Lets review some facts. First, anyone could fake a social security card. Second, the government tells us that a driver's license isn't good enough but then accepts a piece of paper that I could make with photoshop and a good printer (not that I made fake parking permits in college or anything like that) as proof of citizenship? Because, you know, the terrorists came in from Canada.
(note: for those that do not know, the terrorists were here 100% legally and not from Canada. Also, there are hundreds of miles of completely unmonitored borders to our north.)
So I'm in line to get my make-us-all-feel-better license and the line is moving fairly quickly. I'm thinking that I might actually have a good dmv experience. There are 6 senior citizens between me and the bad-attitude person on duty. So the first one gets up to the teller and he is asked for proof of citizenship. This means that he had to produce his driver's license, utility bill and birth certificate at the very least. What does he do? He pulls out his passport. That is like going to the shooting range with a tank. The woman looks at the passport and asks "why are you here?". She then spent the next 10 minutes trying to explain to the group that the passport trumps the piddly license. This sent the group into a tizzy and they then spent the next 5 minutes trying to figure out what to do next. In the meantime, the line has extended out the door and well down the hall.
For quite some time now I have been following the story about how all broadcast television signals will be digital this year. I had not been able to fathom how senior citizens could not grasp the concept even though there have been countless commercials as well as an 800 number. I now get it.

Easy Bubba, You will be old one day too - and these poor old folks were born "before technology existed".
