- Before I begin the main blog, I HAVE to comment on something. Every newspaper stand I've recently passed had a headline about Haitians praying for help. Really? I know that logic and prayer shouldn't mix but hear me out for a second. These people live in one of the most forsaken places on the planet and they were recently hit by a major hurricane. So NOW they think they're going to get supernatural help? Good luck with that. If there is better proof that prayer is really just a nice word for begging, I can't think of what it might be.
- So I've come to realize that Walt Disneyworld is at the crossroads of my existence.
On one hand, Disney is fantastic. It is clean as any public place I've ever been. While pricey, you always seem to get your money's worth (except for the $7 beers. For that price you'd think that they would come with a reach-around). I keep trying to catch one of their employees in a bad mood but I haven't yet (although I think the girl rolled her eyes today when I asked for light bleu cheese on my roast beef sandwich today). It really does seem like the only place that I know of where you can meet people from every corner of the globe and everyone gets along.
Hell, they even import real wenches from Germany to work at the fake Germantown at Epcott.
And then there is the other side of the equation. All that cleanliness and sterility results in a lack of character. This place really does have a rather.... corporate... feel to it. It almost reminds me of the Starbucks commercials where they advertise "the ultimate coffee shop experience". Contradiction? You betcha.
But it goes beyond just the parks. The parent company that is Disney is a major media hub and thus sterlizes all of its subsidiaries (espn, abc, movies, etc). Just what we need - more of the (over-hyped) family-friendly entertainment.
So I guess I'll continue to sit on the fence. I'll probably still go to Epcott and enjoy the sights and sounds and I'll probably still feel guilty about it. And tuesday night I'll probably watch American Idol while sitting at the fake New Orleans bar and then want to kill myself afterwards.

Of course, your Dad thinks that the answer to all questions is "the government".

My dad would be proud....as you know, he too, has a hard time paying homage to a rodent and despises the "corporateness" of the happiest place on earth!
