Some Followups and then a Word From the Devil

I thought I would take the first part of this blog to update you on some recent events.

- I am officially seeing 20/15 out of my eyes after my lasik surgery. This is rather extraordinary because I could barely see my nose before the procedure. It is really a joy - I can see much better when playing ball or doing any other kind of physical activity (I'll make the joke some of you are thinking - Rebecca wishes that her eyes weren't so good during some activities).

I do have to admit that once in a while I'll still walk into the bathroom to take out my contacts. Old habits die hard, I guess. And yes, I still take a perverse pleasure in pulling out the video when guests come over. You can see it here.

- I felt pretty good the day after my big run. Yesterday was a weights day and I can always tell how much energy I have based on which sets I can't do. The funny thing about jogging is that you start to have odd... fantasies... about running when you're not running. I think that is what people speak of when they talk about it becoming addicting.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And now, the fun stuff. And let me first state that I do not go looking for this stuff. I don't belong to any forums where people regularly share this kind of stuff. It is all in the news today.

Pope Creepy was in the news again over the weekend. People keep hoping that he will not just come out against pedophilia but that he will actually do something about it. It seems like a small thing, doesn't it?

Over the weekend there was some kind of priest jamboree (apparently the Vatican will fly in the priests even if they aren't running from the law. This was news to me). What could be more fun than a priest jamboree? No, I'm not making any jokes here. As with the 3 ball, no strike fastball right down the middle, sometimes you just have to wait for the next one. Anyway, this seemed like a great opportunity to finally present a plan to exterminate this disease that has plagued his organization for centuries. So who does he blame for these problems?
“It was to be expected that this new radiance of the priesthood would not be pleasing to the ‘enemy,’” Benedict XVI said. “He would have rather preferred to see it disappear, so that God would ultimately be driven out of the world.”

That's right - the devil is the one that ruined this party. As if it wasn't bad enough to claim that someone paid for your sins, now this.

(The Buffalo News removed this part of the story in the online version of their article but it was present in the printed version. I was surprised that the Catholic newspaper The National had no problems picking up this story, presumably with a straight face. You can read it here).

Besides the obvious, I find this story fascinating in many ways. You really don't hear the talker-to-God refer to the devil too often. I know that I've said this a few times, but if you really believed that such an entity existed wouldn't you be talking about him all the time? Once again, the idea of a dark force is needed in religion to explain why bad things happen to innocent people. I won't go through the normal list of reasons why believing in this entity puts religion on a slippery slope (the big one being that it means that your savior isn't all-powerful).
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jesus was hit by lightning yesterday (link).

No, I'm not bringing this up because I'm happy about it. Although now that I've thought about it, it does remind me of one of my favorite quotes: "Putting a lightning rod on top of a church shows a real lack of faith".

I actually have a different take on this story and it has to do with hypocrisy. When there is a natural disaster in the world you can always find an evangelist that will say that God is punishing atheists, gays or the Ice Capades. So what would these people say about this incident? Nothing, of course. It is all well and good if there 100,000 dead asian kids after a tsunami. But something happens to one of your idols? No message delivered.

I'll offer one up. I've always maintained that people cherry-pick through their religious books. Right there in the second commandment it says that you shouldn't make any graven images of the big guy (and Christians followed this for many centuries until they realized it sold better when they did make them. The Muslims never gave in). Maybe he's mad about that?

Now there you go trying to use logic and caring in these matters. Having a big idol was far more important - everyone knows that.

It would be kind of dumb to build a 6 story metal framed statue, and not expect it to get hit by lightening, don't you think.......... And instead of rebuilding the statue, why don't they take that money, and actually help people in need.

Come on, a relative of yours encouraged me to write more about this stuff :-).
