Geocaching

Created on Sunday, July 5, 2009        Bookmark and Share

One very cool little hobby is geocaching. Geocaching is the finding of hidden geocaches that require a gps unit to find them. In short, geocaching is treasure hunting for grownups. You can read more about this practice in the wiki.

It is surprisingly easy to get started on this little adventure. All you need is a handheld gps unit and one of a multitude of free software programs available on the net. I have a Garmin etrex Vista cx (here).

Once you have your gps unit all you have to do is search for local caches. This is easy - just go to geocaching.com and download a whole list in your area. Once you download them to your computer you can use a free program like EasyGPS to pop them on to your gps. Your gps will immediately show them on the map when you are close to them.

A geocache is usually a waterproof cylinder. Inside the cache you will usually find a guestbook and odd trinkets. I've never understood the trinket aspect of geocaching - you are supposed to take one of the trinkets and then leave your own. Go figure.

Here is a nice little "Geocaching for dummies" guide.

You will see all of the geocaches that we have found in the left menu.

Here is a track of our 2008 hike down to the bottom of the grand canyon.

Here is the profile view that shows elevation and distance (produced in Garmin MapSource).
