- You may or may not have noticed but I *finally* got my sortable movie review table working (see it
here
). You can now sort my reviews based on title, my review and the rottentomatoes.com rating.
I do feel bad for Rebecca because I am an awful person to be with when I finish a movie. I just want to dissect it and either find what I would do differently or figure out what I loved. Some of you are probably asking "why don't you just enjoy it?". For me, this is enjoyment. I love being a critic and that is probably why I love Idol so much (cringing, again).
Also, several of you have commented offline about my thoughts on
The Blind Side
. Please put your comments on the site so that everyone can see them. Also, if you haven't tried out the new comment function please give it a whirl. It is a SIGNIFICANT upgrade over the POS that was on the old site.
- I read some more really intersting stuff in Freakanomics the other day.
The government did a rather comprehensive study on children and education in the late 90's. What is amazing is that they found that certain factors seemed to be evident in kids that did well in school. For example, kids with educated parents that made a good salary did better in school. Kids that were adopted did poorer in the early grades but were actually more likely to go to college. And despite what you're told by a union that has a vested interest in such things, things like class size mattered little.
- I know I've alluded to this before but there is this woman at the gym that drives me bonkers. Not only does she take one of the two best treadmills at work, but she
walks
on it. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for any kind of exercise. But it is pretty clear that the other treadmills can't be used for jogging so there is a line behind her when she uses one meant for jogging.
But that isn't even what eats me up. She cranks up the incline to 8 or 9. Sounds like a good workout for your calfs, right? Wrong. She proceeds to hold on to the handle so that she is still perpendicular to the treadmill. I don't know why but this annoys me more than the fact she's walking slowly on one of the jogging treadmills.
A close second to this are the people that go on the stairmasters and then practically lay on the handle bars so that they can feel good about having it on a "high" setting. They are completely fooling themselves into thinking that this is a workout. If you doubt this, try doing a pullup the next time you're at the gym. If you're like most people you probably can't. Now try it again but this time have a friend give you a boost with their index finger. That's right, just one finger. Guess what? You'll be able to do it. That goes to show you how easy it is to cheat on those kinds of exercises.
- I heard that they are now casting for the next "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie. I don't know if this is legal or not but Disney is saying that anyone with fake cans will be ineligible to be the new heroine (Keira Knightley quit, in case you haven't heard). To prove that you have a real chest you are going to have to jog in front of some Disney employees.
I want to go back and fire my guidance counsellor for the lousy career advice that I got.
- And last but certainly not least, we had decided a while ago that we would in fact find out the gender of Bubba (the working title of our baby-to-be). We were slated to find this out next week. As luck would have it, Rebecca makes a weekly trip to the doctor because... well, lets just say she worries easily ;-). The nurse yesterday did not know that we did not know the gender of the baby yet and she let is slip.
We are expecting a boy.
(Insert juvenile/predictable joke about how easy it was too see on the sonogram and what conclusions might be drawn. Sometimes you have to let the obvious jokes go).
