April
It's been one of those weeks where things have kind of gotten to me.
- In case you are not a Facebook friend (I really hate that phrase), I got into it a bit with a "friend" on facebook. I posted
this
link that talked about the latest tax data. Here are the highlights: the top 10% of wage earners pay 73% of the taxes (that is not a misprint), about 50% of Americans pay no income taxes when deductions are factored in, and 40% of Americans actually make money.
My point with posting this isn't to start a political discussion here. I can discuss this stuff with people that completely disagree with my ideas, but the conversation is always civil. We'll rag on each other a bit but that's all.
Invariably, you always come across a person that is a complete arsehat about this stuff. One particular gentleman said that he could spell out his position in crayons if he had to. Now I grew up down the street from this person and didn't know him well. With someone that I knew or even liked a little bit, I could overlook this. But I just wasn't in the mood to deal with this kind of tone. We had fundamental differences (he thought that we should just take what we need from someone that makes more than he does) and I don't. No amount of charts or words is going to win that argument as it is based on philosophy.
So anyway, I did something I never do. I unfriend him. He sent another insulting email and I responded by letting him know that he was a dullar (which he is) and that I've heard his position stated by far more intelligent people and in far more interesting ways. It was actually a pretty funny email but there isn't much point in sharing it here (I think).
- I was actually unfriended myself a couple of months ago. It was the day after the Haiti disaster and someone that was another facebook friend (which really just translates to "someone I have on a list that I'll never ever see in person"). This person listed a one sentence post that said that our God was an awesome God. I know, I know... I should mind my own business. I think I was just really bummed out about the whole thing and the newspaper headlines that said that we should pray for these people. All I said was that given the events of the previous day, it might not be a good time to post something like this. Wow, the hens came out of the henhouse. Right up until the time I was unfriended.
For some reason I was a little unfriended by that and I almost dropped her an email. And then I remembered something that I learned years ago that I still consider to be one of the most important life lessons that I've ever learned. There are times in life where you feel that you need to 'win'. Sometimes you can't win, but by becoming a prisoner to an emotion you can absolutely lose.
- I read that they found some bone fragments near Ground Zero last week. Why is this newsworthy? Because they are going to hault the current project and spend 1.4 million dollars to try to identify some specs of human remains. When will our obsession with death end?
- I think I found a country artist that I actually like. I know I've talked about my loathing of country music
before
but I am here to say that I've found an artist that I genuinely enjoy. Her name is Lucinda Williams and I would be describe her as a grittier/bluesier version of Sheryl Crowe, with a tad more country and folk tossed in. You can listen to her by clicking on the link in the left sidebar - it should be up for about a month after the publication date.
- I'll have an update on Bubba the Pirate later today or tomorrow. I bought him his first gift - you will want to see the pictures. Believe it or not, my page is in the first few results if you google "Bubba the pirate".
