Pirates and Unexpected Sadness

I happened to be searching my email earlier this morning and I came across an email from April 2005.

Jen hadn't been feeling well and had been going to the doctors. The week after this email she was diagnosed with cancer and less then 4 months later she was gone. I think the fact that I did not expect to come across this email really made the sadness of reading something from my friend that much harder.

Some of you asked for an update on the Pirate so here it is.

No, we still do not have a name picked out but I think we've narrowed it down to a few ('Blackbeard' is on the list. I think). Rebecca's co-workers threw her a shower last week and she had quite a catch (then again, she's probably spent at least that much over the years attending other people's showers so I guess it is fitting that she did well). The Pirate's room is filled with toys and clothes. The crib is still slanted to one side because we put it together wrong. Rebecca is doing very well - she barely looks pregnant and she hasn't been sick at all. She still exercises (as directed by the doctor) and does most of her usual jobs. She gets tired earlier in the evening but otherwise everything looks good.

(and I still can't make out a damn thing on the sonograms)

I think some people might have read my last blog in a manner in which it was not intended.

I am not some droid that is completely impervious to the outside world. If you tried hard enough you could probably say or something that would hurt me. As I said at the end of the blog, I had been thinking about how people we are affected in various ways by the world. I felt that I've learned a lot in this area so I thought I would share some of it. I wasn't bragging about myself or looking down on others - I hope that it did not seem like I was.

A recent quote from Bill Maher (I'm paraphrasing here):

"You may have heard about a recent airplane crash in which a single child survived. Many called this a miracle sent from above but I don't see it that way. It seems as though God was throwing a perfect game with two outs in the ninth and screwed it up".

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is a classic - Siskel and Ebert really hated each other. Want a deuce chill? Ebert gets on Siskel about his speaking problems. Not long after this was filmed Siskel was diagnosed with a cancer that had been affecting his speech. Yikes.
