Nation must strive to keep church and state separate
It never ceases to amaze me how many people refer to the United States as being a “Christian” nation because our founding fathers were supposedly Christian. Some of our founding fathers were Christians, many were deists and it wouldn’t surprise me if a few would have been atheists if the political climate allowed for it.
Even so, there is absolutely nothing in our Constitution that references God or Christianity. The Declaration of Independence does reference God but that was not a legal document. In the First Amendment, it is stated that the government should not support or discourage any one religion. A “wall of separation” should exist between the church and the state. How much clearer can that be?
The framers were conscious of the fact that religious fervor has crept into just about every government in the history of man. Given that hatred, bigotry and war have always come along with this fact, why do people continue to try to force their religious beliefs into the government? Isn’t it enough that we can all pray (or not pray) without the fear of persecution? The world would be a better place if we did this on our own time without trying to force it on the others.

There will be a separation of church and state - "so help me god".
