June
Every once in a while I am asked if I golf. I usually toss out my stock answer: I'll golf when I can't do the other things anymore. My reason for thinking this way may surprise you - it isn't like I'm some superjock. When I was in college I finally gave in and joined a couple of friends for a round of golf at the local course. I had a great day - I shot par on my first hole after chipping in from the rough. The rest of the day was about as good (until John ate the food that Damon had just throw up on, but that is a story for another day). Unfortuately, that was the best round of golf that I ever shot and things got progressively worse from there. It seemed pointless to get up that early to pay all that money only to be really, really frustrated. That frustration can wait for when I am retired.
I really, really want to push off that retirement date as long as I can. While I have always been athletic I had never been one to work out much. I had tried to pick it up every now and then but it never stuck. I joined the local gym when I turned 30 and for some reason this time it stuck. One of these days I am going to write a manual of all of the things that I've learned. Just not today :-).
One thing I've noticed in the last few years is that at some point people kind of..... let themselves go. I don't necessarily mean that they got fat or anything like that. They just became kind of sedintary. I kicked this thought around for a while trying to process how this fit into my own life.
I think I've come up with my own marker: as long as I can run, I haven't given in.
Think about it. There seems to be this point in time where running or jogging is no longer an option. They still may be quite active and not in any way lazy, but the option to have one foot off the ground at any given time isn't on the table. I feel that if I can run, I am young.
The hard part about coming to terms with this realizion is that I needed to jog. I like to run when I'm playing ball but generally not more than 100 or 200 feet at a time. I have been in good shape for quite some time but most of my cardio was doing an hour at a time on the stairmaster. So over the winter I started to mix in some treadmill time - by the spring I could run for about 45 minutes at a time.
Many of you may know that it is a lot easier to run on a treadmill than it is on the pavement. The first few times out where pretty tough - shin splints are far from pleasant. One thing that encouraged me (and took away any excuses) is that jogging is not at all bad for your legs and that the pain does go away
So it is now June and this past Sunday I ran for about 7 miles. And believe it or not, I actually kind of enjoyed it. I never thought I'd say this but for the first time in my life I can see how running can be enjoyable and I can see how people just tune out and do it without suffering the whole time. If it hadn't have been over 80 degrees I might have actually gone on for a little longer.
(sorry for the soccer mom-type blog today but I though others might find this interesting)

Oh Adam...I'm all teary-eyed! It means so much coming from you. You are actually the reason I started running. "The cause" gave me the motivation to continue. You once said, "I'm young as long as I can run." That has rang so true for me and that phrase has become an anchor during my training. So THANK YOU! I can't begin to tell you how it feels having that medal hanging around my neck! What do ya say we train up and run the half next year together? And Kristen, thank you!! :)
