I tend to watch EVERYTHING on tivo so it is rare that I have the "pleasure" of seeing any commercials. Last night was a bit of an exception as I was flipping back and forth between the baseball game and the 7th game of the Stanley Cup finals.
As luck would have it I just happened to catch the commercial for the next Transformers movie. I had not seen the previous movie because... well... it would have had to have gotten really really good reviews for me to see it. I tend not to be get too excited about action movies that are high on graphics and low on story.
As a kid I LOVED the transformers cartoon. It was fantastically written (at least in my 10-year-old head it was) and the characters were great to play with. And they made for really cute scenes when posed with Barbie, but I digress...
Anyway, I'm not so sure this plays well in the adult world. From what I remember, this is the snyopsis of the Transformers:
They came from planet Megatron because that planet ran out of energy. They then had to transform themselves into earthly vessels so as not to be detected by humans.
Well, where to begin....
- They had to take earthly forms? Really? Never mind the fact at they still existed as robots most of the time. Never mind the fact that we knew they were here so it wasn't like it was a big mysters. It was important that when in travel mode that they travelled along with the rest of us - as cars and planes. Although they could fly when they were in robot mode but sometimes they drove. Worse, in later years they developed the Dinobots. They fit in with the other dinosaurs.... oh, wait....
- They had guns and all kinds of alien technology but often times their battles would end up in fist fights.
- Some of them were dumber than the other ones. Wouldn't they have all kind of had the same technology?
- They were these huge robots but when they transformed they could become as small as handguns, radios or cassette tapes.
I know, I know... I'm looking at this too literally. But when I see something like Han Solo banging on the warp drive to get it to work, I have to scratch my head a little.
