August
As of this week I've been at the same desk with the same phone for 5 years. Before last Thursday I had been under the assumption that anyone trying to reach me had to dial the external number and then ask for my extension. At no point did I ever notice that my external outside number was displayed clearly on the LCD of my phone. As I've said before, I'm not always the fastest guy in the world.
One of the blogs that I am most proud of is the one that defended the idea that the only romantic love is unfulfilled loved (read it
here
). A woman stumbled upon that page the other day (it is high in the search results for that phrase) and left a really nice comment (
here
). It is kind of cool that I can write a blog and months later someone that works for a marine store in Louisiana can stumble upon it at lunch time.
Rebecca and I decided to start watching
Cheers
from the beginning. Why? We've always talked about it and Damon and I quote it to the point of annoying everyone around us. We're 4 episodes in and I really believe that the show stands up well over time. The writing is crisp and witty and there is real chemistry between Sam and Diane. One of these days I might actually sit down and watch Seinfeld - I've never seen an entire episode of the show (no joke). I still don't think I like it as I'm not a fan of Larry David's style.
The controversy about the Mosque in Manhattan really bums me out.
First, our Constitution guarantees that the government will not favor one religion over another (this is another example of why the statement that our founding fathers were Christians is laughable). Our rights are guaranteed regardless of how the majority feels (this is why the Prop 8 decision in California was
not
and example of a judge being an activist).
And yes, the majority is against the placement of the Mosque. That's right - scores of believers in other Gods think that this is a bad idea. Never mind the hundreds of years of the Inquisition. Never mind the Oklahoma City bombing was done by a religious wacko. Never mind that 9/11 was performed by extremists and not in any way approved by the Muslim groups in this country.
What people are missing is that those men were extremists that followed the more dangerous aspects of their book. The same kinds of passages exist in every holy book - would they feel the same way if a Christian group had performed the same acts? Of course not.
I've been reading a book on Thomas Paine and I found out something fascinating last night. Paine said the following of monarchies:
"I compare it to something kept behind a curtain, about which there is a great deal of bustle and fuss, and a wonderful air of seeming solemnity, but when, by an accident, the curtain happens to open and the company see what it is, they burst into laughter"
Sound familiar? That's right - it influenced Frank Baum's
The Wizard of Oz
. Paine said many extraordinary things. One of my favorites was his belief that titles were nick-names and nicknames were titles. I must say that someone's title has
never
elevated my opinion of them (and extreme use of a title will always knock them down a few pegs).
Something must have happened in the media lately to cause lots of people to google the phrase "oddly hot". If you search on that my
oddly hot
page comes up first in the results. I really need to update that list - any ideas?

C'mon, I don't think Benicio Del Torro can be on an "oddly hot" list. Tony Soprano? Really? Is it the whole power thing? I just see a big fat guy.
